Reit has been working with the Churchill School for over 10 years. As an institution in our neighborhood, we love being able to help and collaborate with them.

Every year, we develop a unique style for their annual report. In 2019, we designed the report in an amorphous style — using playful and organic shapes to express positivity, whimsy, and a flexibility that Churchill exudes in all their classrooms and activities. The report was a huge success in the Churchill community, and as a result they wanted to continue to develop the visual style to use across all branded pieces — reports, printed pieces, and emails. Since then, it has become their brand style.

Reit explored several design options before developing the Churchill School's final brand style.

Churchill Style Guidelines

Keeping consistency across all communications

The Churchill School needs to send out several emails to several different groups of people — parents, teachers, board members, and more. With their newly-developed brand style, we created several email templates for them to use across any and all emails they would need to send. The design elements were simple to accommodate any type of content, but effective in staying consistent with the brand style.

The Churchill Parent Guide was a small, simple brochure to increase awareness and engagement in the school’s fundraising efforts.
Churchill's latest annual report combines the styles of the 2019 report and the Parent Guide — a mix of fun and structure for all their audiences.

Elevating Learning to Transform Lives

Avenu, a start up, was positioning themselves as an education service provider creating global access to a high-quality, affordable U.S. education.

Services Provided:
  • Brand naming
  • Visual Brand System
  • Branded Marketing Templates
  • Messaging and Positioning
  • Website Copywriting
  • Logo Development
  • Color palette
  • Typography
  • Graphic system

Inspired by Avenu’s mission, Reit was excited to lead the the marketing team and help establish the brands foundational elements and flagship materials.

Kicking things off, we began with exploring naming options sensitive to the implications involved with languages from around the world. Additionally, we developed taglines, messaging, established the tone of voice as well as itemized the company’s key benefits and supporting features. Guidelines were established and the logo and brand assets were rolled out across all platforms inclusive of presentations, digital, print, and internal documents.

Choosing the name

Amongst the hundreds of names we developed, we chose the name Avenu. An avenue is an entrance; a passage by which a place may be reached; a means by which something may be accomplished. All these meanings described the brand’s purpose and mission. We altered the word to end in a “U,” representing you the individual and/or the university. Education is the “avenue” for students to achieve a better life. Several design options were deeply explored to match the name with the style that would bolster the meaning.

The Abaarso School

Doing work that makes a difference

In 2013, the Abaarso School was launched against all odds in a remote location in Somaliland to prepare the future leaders of a state devastated by a brutal civil war.

Their rigorous agenda demands a full commitment centered around integrity, tenacity and reasoning to insure those who succeed are well prepared to face every challenge and advance their society. Graduates have gone on to study at Harvard, Yale, MIT and Brown, yet the school cannot subsist without substantial funding.

Reit was charged with creating a website that could serve as an international beacon to shine a spotlight on the school and stimulate investment. The site needed to convey the brilliance of its promise along with the depth of its need to move and motivate visitors to support its mission. Vibrant colors were chosen to convey optimism, highlighting personal stories as well as challenges and opportunities with bold, clear mechanisms to contribute.

The press took notice as evidenced by features in New York Times, 60 Minutes, BBC and CNN Money. Because brilliance knows no borders.

The history of the area

Somalia and Somaliland are located in the “Horn of Africa,” the easternmost peninsula in Northeast Africa.  In May 1991, after a brutal civil war, the Republic of Somaliland declared its independence from Somalia. Somaliland has made great strides, including establishing a stable government with peaceful elections.

Still, Somaliland remains unrecognized internationally, and the combined area of Somaliland and Somalia has been ranked as the 2nd most Fragile State in the world by The Fund for Peace for most of the past decade.

Spotlighting the school

Reit was tasked with designing a clear, positive website to express its mission. We focused on the students of the school, letting them and the environment speak for itself. With bold messaging and striking colors, we brought their story to life.

The Abaarso website before its redesign had small images, wall-to-wall text, and little hierarchy in the content. A mostly black and white site, nothing was able to pop.
With Reit's full redesign, we were able blow out images, create points of focus in the page content, and keep the user more engaged.
